Topaz also has an interesting history!  It was originally found on the Egyptian island of Topazios in the Red Sea by the Romans, and has been highly valued by many societies.  Originally it only referred to the yellow color of topaz. Egyptians believes it was a stone directly connected to the God, Ra.  Romans believed it protected you in battle and brought riches. Greeks believed it gave you superhuman strength. In medieval times it was used in medicines and believed to turn color when poison was near.

The story of blue topaz is a story of alchemy. Scientists researching how color occurs in minerals discovered that natural radiation in rocks in the ground creates the color in many crystals, like zircon. Experiments with topaz showed that a stable blue color could be induced in colorless topaz or white topaz by irradiating it and then heating it. Blue topaz can be found naturally as it is here, as well as lab produced.
